What is CSAT?
CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) is a
priliminary exam (elimination test) to
select candidates who can appear for the
IAS Mains Exams.
The CSAT has 2 papers and both are
compulsory for all
Paper I: General Knowledge (objective
type paper for max 200 marks)
Paper II: General Aptitude (objective type
paper for max 200 marks)
Who is the eligible for CSAT?
Educational Qualification: Any degree
holder (or degree final year students who
can get the degree by July of the exam
year) from any recognized University in
any discipline with any percentage is
eligible
Age Qualification: A general category
candidate must have attained the age of
21 years and must not have attained the
age of 30 years on 1st August of the exam
year. OBC/SC/ST/PH category candidates
can avail age relaxation
Attempts limit: A general category
candidates can attempt the exams up to 4
times (applying and not appearing for any
paper does not count as an attempt.
Appearing for one or more papers count
as an attempt). OBC/PH category
candidatescan attempt the exams up to 7
times. SC/ST candidates can attempt any
number of times as long as their age limit
is within the eligibility range.
How much should I score to pass CSAT?
About 11,000 to 12,000 candidates will
be selected and in an average difficulty
paper, a general category candidate
should score about 220 (out of total 400)
to pass CSAT (to qualify for IAS Mains) For
reserved category it would be in 180 -
200 range.
Cut-off: UPSC in the past year did not use
paper-wise cut-off (no separate cut-off
for paper I and Paper II) So, for now,
only the total score of both papers is what
matters, not individual paper score
Score: The marks scored in the CSAT is
being used to select candidates for IAS
Mains only. The marks will not be carried
over as every starts IAS Mains with clean
slate (score 0)

(a) Candidates are required to apply
online using the website http://
www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed
instructions for filling up online
applications are available on the
abovementioned website. The applicants
are advised to submit only single
application; however, if due to any
unavoidable situation, if he/she submits
another/multiple applications, then he/
she must ensure that applica- tion with
the higher RID is complete in all respects
like applicants’ details, exami- nation
centre, photograph, signature, fee etc.
The applicants who are submitting
multiple applications should note that
only the applications with higher RID
(Reg- istration ID) shall be entertained by
the Commission and fee paid against one
RID shall not be adjusted against any
other RID.
(b) All candidates, whether already in
Government Service, Government owned
industrial undertakings or other similar
organisations or in private employment
should submit their applications direct to
the Commission. Persons already in
Government Service, whether in a
permanent or temporary capacity or as
workcharged employees other than casual
or daily rated employees or those serving
under the Public Enterprises are however,
required to submit an undertaking that
they have informed in writing their Head
of Office/Department that they have
applied for the Examination. Candidates
should note that in case a communication
is received from their employer by the
Commission withholding permission to the
candidates applying for/appearing at the
examination, their application will be
liable to be rejected/candidature will be
liable to be cancelled.
